I forgot to mention, here is my short lesson plan to be done in one computer classroom. Feel free to comment it and criticise!

The ABCD objective would be:

A: young learners (3rd grade)

B: will reproduce and accurately use parts of the city vocabulary

C: in exercises projected from a computer

D: with no pronunciation errors

This is the lesson plan:

  1. Introduce parts of  the city using city plan from a book and using flashcards (teacher)

  1. Practice pronunciation of some difficult words (orally with teacher)

  1. Listen and do a listening exercise where the children hear the sounds of city places (like church bells, train arriving at the station, actors from a film, children at the playground...) and guess and write the place (class CD - children)

  1. Do worksheets on a projector/tv connected to a computer (the children are chosen from a dropdown menu the correct word using a mouse one by one)

  1. Imagine a town, give it a name and draw a plan of it making sure the town has places learned during the lesson (if there is time left, if not, the children will do it for homework)

  1. Dear Ivana,
Good to see your short lesson plan done for a one-computer class room with the beginners as learners. They will be motivated to enjoy the animations of a town and answer the questions. If they are going out or have the basic idea of the town, they can pronounce the words and give you the contextual meaning of words too. The exercises are well-structured to encourage learning and having a good score too.Really a good lesson to begin with. Soon they will try to do a lot of things on their own using the computer in the class.
    Best wishes.

  2. Hi Mahesh!

I am glad you liked my lesson plan and I hope to encourage children to use computers more often even for learning.

  3. Hi Ivana,

Like your city plan-lesson. I was thinking about the pronunciation activity, after having practiced with them how to check later on how good their pronunciation really is: I was thinking of perhaps when they present their own city plans at the end of the lesson, they should explain the places they chose and pronounce them of course.

I was struggling with point 4: How will the students do the exercises? Since there is one computer in the classroom, does each student get a turn? How will you organize that?

    Looking forward to your comments

    Best wishes,

    Mireille

    1. Hi Mireille,

thanks for the comment on my lesson plan. I thought to get them one after another to use the mouse. Young learners' classes are rather small, usually there are not more than 22 children. Regarding their city plans, if they are to do it for homework, surely they will present it the next time they have English lesson.

  4. Hi, Ivana.

I like that this activity focuses on pronunication. I am reading a book now about the critical age hypothesis for language learning. We often assume that younger learners learn more and learn faster, but this book shows research that disagrees with this. It shows that kids at the awareness age of 12-15 are the best learners because
    1. They are old enough to know their learning styles.
    2. They have developed metacognitive skills.
    3. They can do homework and focus on their areas of weakness.
    4. They have a developed L1 already (so can make good use of their universal grammar device)

However, their research shows that small kids always develop better pronunication, because of their integrative motivation to fit in and sound like the tapes, movies, and friends they hear!

I hope your lesson is a success!

    1. Hi Evelyn!

Thanks for your post, it is interesting. Can you please, send me the name of the book you are reading, it seems something I could benefit from it...

      Thanks,

  5. Hi Ivana,

I did comment on your activity in our Nicenet discussion but since the site is still down and I do not know whether you had seen the comment before the site crashed, I would like to repeat that I like your idea very much.

Doing names of places in a town and introducing all the vocabulary related to it, may sometimes cause problems to young learneres. Your activity will most certainly help them.

The choice of online tools is brilliant. I will try them with my little daughter. She is only 5 but she already likes listening to the sound of English and they do some elementary English at pre-school. I am sure she'll enjoy the exercises regardless of still being too young to do them on her own. We shall have a great time, I am sure about that.

    Thanks for sharing,
    Jasmina

    1. Hi Jasmina,

I am glad you like the activities and hope your daughter will enjoy it. I also have 5 year old son, but, unfortunately, he does not share my enthusiasm for learning English, you are fortunate.
