Šibenik

Hi everyone!
There were so many different topics to discuss this passing week. Regarding the PPt presentations, I have been using them many times during my classes, as probably many of you also do. I included video clips, music, links and some simple games, but I haven't ever used it for creating for eg jeopardy quiz. So, I will try to include some kind of quiz in it for my weekly task as I would surely include blank page. It really is a good idea to draw some attention during the presentation.

I have also checked the other 5 applications for those who do not like PPts. I really like Prezi!
It is fun, seems so lively compared to PPt.
How can  PPts help us engage our students more? I think they are just help that must be carefully intricated in our lesson. Not to be confusing, I am strongly pro technology. Regardless the good technological preparation is time consuming, I think we ought to use it because the children we teach are born with technology, they are digital natives, it makes the great part of their life and we simply must keep up with them and the technology itself.
To conclude, I don't think that the role of a teacher can be replaced with technology, but I sure think that it can make things more interesting and appealing to learners.

  1. Hello Ivana,

I completely agree with you that the new generation is born with technology, and we have to update ourselves to be able to teach them in a language they understand best.

The Interactive PowerPoint is the find of the week for me. I am so happy that I could create one such presentation with ConcepTest, Think Pair Square, and quick write.

A lot of preparation goes into creating these PPTs. But once made they can be used again and again with slight modifications according to the need of a particular class.

I am definitely going to use Interactive Power Points and Prezis for my future presentations.

    Regards,
    Vinita

    1. Hi Vinita!

I agree that the PPTs can be used over and over again, especially if they are well prepared. I have some that circulate for some generations now.

  2. Hi, Ivana.

I agree that we need to question whether or not PPTs really do engage our students. I think that is why it is important to make them interactive and to incorporate lots of different technology to keep them on their toes to participate. The readings we did this week will help us to make more interactive activities. However, I also think that using PPT after PPT is not good. There need to be different types of activities in language learning. For example, games, ice breakers, pair and group work, etc. I would say that I only use PPT about 25% fo the time in my class. However, now as an adminstrator, I use PPT for every meeting and for every Professional Development workshop I oversee.

Since this generation is born with computers in their hands, it is important, as you say, to use technology to keep them familiar and to show that we are adaptable to change as well. My daugther is only 5 and she is already demanding an IPAD for Christmas. I won't buy it for her yet, because she only thinks it is for games. It is a new generation, though. I only got my first computer about 10 years ago, and now this generation must have them by kindergarden!

    Hope all is well!

    1. Hi Evelyn,

my son is 5 and he already knows how to turn on the PC and start his favorite game. I didn't teach him, he just saw it and somehow picked it up. So I understand your concern.

I also agree the PPTs should not be the only mean of teaching. Of course, everything that repeats itself becomes boring. But, from time to time, it is useful with children, if nothing, than to break the routine.

  3. Yes! The new generation of students are technology natives! I love this term, Ivana.

I also agree that technology cannot replace the teacher, but it can aid the teacher and enhance the learning environment. In this day and age, it is crucial to incorporate technology into learning. As you have pointed out, our students are accustomed to it, use it for reasons beyond learning, and are fascinated by it. Simply put, it is part of their lives, so it makes since for us to use it to our advantage and theirs.

I'm glad you found the week 6 topic to be of interest and found new ways to use power point. I agree with you that Prezi is lively, but you must also keep in mind that sometimes, lively can be distracting. Don't get me wrong, I like Prezi too, but it must be used appropriately, just like any tool.

    Great reflections!

    1. Hi Courtney,

I know you have noticed my enthusiasm over Prezi, it is because I always get excited when I discover something new that I like. I like that it "moves" like those futuristic see-through boards that you see in movies, the one that react to movement of a hand. I am always open to technology, although I agree with you it can be little too distracting sometimes. But, like in life, I only need to find the right measure and it will be all right.

P.S. Thanks for your insightful comment!
